The Bushland Reserve parkland in Coburg is a innovative public space with a focus on environmentally sustainable (ESD) design. Previously the park was used by Moreland City Council as a maintenance depot, and at the time it became redundant featured a large area of hardstand concrete paving, a number of disused office and shed spaces.
Dickson Architecture were engaged for this project to produce a design and documentation for a new parkland shelter canopy using materials available on site. The design utilises lightweight steel trusses, steel universal beams, a girder truss and timbers from an existing steel portal framed shed. The existing portals were cut and re-configured to create the new trusses, allowing the maximum clear-span sheltered space with the minimum vertical supports. The design features two large concrete benches, recycled from the original concrete paving; cut, polished and re-assembled into the finished form. |
